Shoaib Malik cleared to play in first Test against Australia

Pakistan offspinner Shoaib Malik is clear to play in the first Test against Australia starting Thursday as the results of tests on his bowling action will not be known for at least a week, officials here said.

Allrounder Malik was cited for a suspect topspin action following a one-day series in Sri Lanka in October and was tested for two hours by human movement specialists at the University of Western Australia on Monday.

Although analysts said they should know the angle of his elbow extension within a few days, it was unlikely the report would be complete for at least a week.

Earlier this year the university carried out the same tests on Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, clearing him to use his controversial "doosra" delivery.

Even if Malik's topspinner is found to be flawed, he could still bowl off-breaks or play solely as a batsman.

He batted at number six in last week's the recent tour match against Western Australia and is expected to do the same against Australia.

Pakistan's Latif seeks comeback as cricket ban reduced

Former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper Rashid Latif said Wednesday he hoped to revive his international career after the Pakistan Cricket Board reduced a six-month ban and cleared him for selection.

Latif, 36, was banned from all cricket for six months after he led the Karachi team on a walkout to protest a dangerous pitch in a first-class match at Faisalabad last month.

Ex-Pakistan hero backs Shoaib Akhtar's long run-up

Akhtar's effectiveness is at its fullest if he comes from a long run-up

Former Pakistan fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz Thursday defended paceman Shoaib Akhtar's notoriously long run-up, saying he would be a mediocre bowler if he shortened the distance to the crease.

Akhtar dismissed the idea, saying "a jet cannot get full flight if its runway is cut short."

Warne, Lara, Gilchrist in World XI for Asian tsunami charity match

Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne will return to international one-day cricket next week to play for a Rest of the World XI against an Asian XI to raise funds for victims of the Asian tsunami disaster.
Warne was named along with West Indian captain Brian Lara, leading Australians Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden and Glenn McGrath and Englishman Darren Gough.

The first fund-raising match will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on January 10 with the return leg at a venue to be selected by the Asian Cricket Council on a date to be fixed in February or March

The December 26 tsunami, which was triggered by an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia's Aceh province, is estimated to have killed 150,000 people with the toll mounting.

The world team, chosen by former Australian captain Steve Waugh, who held strong ties with the Indian sub-continent, represents Warne's first one-day international since he retired from international limited-overs cricket two years ago.

The Asian XI, to be selected by former New Zealand Test paceman Richard Hadlee and expected to comprise players from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh for the Melbourne match, will be announced on Monday.

Pakistan's Razzak to replace Akhtar in Asian tsunami charity match

Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzak will replace injured paceman Shoaib Akhtar in the Asian XI to face a Rest of the World team at a tsunami relief charity match in Melbourne next week, officials said Friday.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said Razzak was drafted into the squad after Akhtar was forced to withdraw because of a hamstring injury.

Officials said Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar was in Australia to support the match but it was unclear whether an elbow injury would prevent him from playing.

A sellout crowd of 80,000 is expected for the all-star match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground next Monday. It is expected to raise about five million dollars (3.83 million US).

The ICC said the Asian XI would appear in green uniforms with gold trim during the day-nighter, while the Rest of the World would wear navy blue with white stripes.

South African Rudi Koertzen and New Zealand's Billy Bowden would be the on-field umpires, with England's Chris Broad acting as match referee.

The ICC also allocated squad numbers to both teams.

The squads are:

ASIA

1. Sourav Ganguly (IND/capt) 2. Marvan Atapattu (SRI) 3. Rahul Dravid (IND) 4. Sanath Jayasuriya (SRI) 5. Alok Kapali (BAN) 6. Zaheer Khan (IND) 7. Anil Kumble (IND) 8 Muttiah Muralitharan (SRI) 9. Kumar Sangakkara (SRI) 10. Virender Sehwag (IND) 11. Sachin Tendulkar 12. Chaminda Vaas (SRI) 13. Yousuf Youhana (PAK) 14. Abdul Razzak (PAK)

Rest of the World

1. Rickey Ponting (AUS/capt) 2. Stephen Fleming (NZL/vc) 3. Dwayne Bravo (WIN) 4. Chris Cairns (NZL) 5. Chris Gayle (WIN) 6. Adam Gilchrist (AUS) 7. Darren Gough (ENG) 8. Matthew Hayden (AUS) 9. Brian Lara (WIN) 10. Glenn McGrath (AUS) 11. Daniel Vettori (NZL) 12. Shane Warne (AUS)

Pakistan to tour India from February 25: Indian cricket board

Pakistan's cricket team will tour India from February 25, Indian cricket board secretary Karunakaran Nair announced on Saturday.
"The Pakistan team will tour India from February 25 till April 18," Nair said. "The itinerary is still being worked out and will be announced shortly."

Pakistan are scheduled to play three Tests and five one-day internationals apart from two practice games during their 53-day tour.

They last toured India in 1999 when a two-Test series was drawn 1-1. Pakistan won an Asian Test championship match against India in Calcutta on the same tour.

But bilateral series between the two countries were banned soon after by the Indian government because of tensions over the disputed region of Kashmir which is claimed by both.

Cricketing ties were resumed after a thaw in relations last year when India went to Pakistan on their first full tour in almost 15 years, winning both the Test as well as a one-day series.
